PC HESS SCREEN

Establishing the cause of binocular vision problems is one of the most challenging aspects of clinical practice. The PC Hess Screen provides the clinician with a powerful new PC-based tool for assessing such patients, without having to invest in bulky and expensive equipment. Here is what the reviewers and users say:

“An invaluable tool for ophthalmologists, orthoptists and optometrists”

“It is fast, accurate and takes the hardwork out of assessing oculomotor problems.”

“I feel much more confident dealing with all forms of binocular vision problems now I can assess motility accurately”

Features

  • Rapid and accurate assessment of the size and direction of phoria / tropia in up to 25 directions of gaze
  • Results plotted in conventional Hess screen format allowing the clinician to establish whether a deviation is concomitant or incomitant and which muscle is affected
  • A variety of analytical tools to help the clinician form a diagnosis
  • Built in database allows results to be archived for future reference
  • Results can be printed or pasted into referral letters and reports
  • Runs on a standard PC
  • Voice instructions
  • Comprehensive on-line help

How it works: The patient views the computer screen through red and blue goggles. A red and a blue circle are displayed on the screen and the patient moves one of the circles until it appears to be aligned with the other circle. This is repeated for circles positioned in different parts of the screen thus establishing the size of any phoria / tropia in each direction of gaze. The process is repeated with the colours reversed.

Plotting options: Results are plotted in the familiar Hess format as shown below. A number of analytical tools are provided to help the clinician quantify any defect and reach a diagnosis. Charts can be printed out pasted directly into referral letters or reports.

Integrated database: The program contains a fully-featured database to allow records to be stored and to allow changes in Hess plots to be analysed over a period of time. A variety of export options are available to allow the data to be analysed by other software.

“We have replaced our conventional Hess screens with PCs. The PC Hess Screen saves time and patients find it much easier.”
